On June 28, a tropical storm developed in the Caribbean before rapidly strengthening into Hurricane Beryl. Beryl reached Category 5 status just 3 days later, on July 1, the earliest a Category 5 hurricane has developed in the Atlantic region on record.
Beryl made landfall in Texas as a Category 1 hurricane on July 8, and while the strength of the storm had weakened, millions of residents lost power and tornadoes began to break out across Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana. The rainfall from Beryl as it moved into the U.S. has also caused devastating floods.
