Jodi: I wish to see a world where we address inequalities in gender. So I wanted to convert my portfolio to a gender-lens investment strategy. I saw it as an investment opportunity. But there was just one problem. It required selling a number of the stocks that for example didn't even have one woman on the board. And for me, that would've resulted in a very large capital gains tax.
I realized later that I could use my Schwab Charitable donor advised fund however, as a tool, and take those individual securities, donate them to my Schwab Charitable donor advised fund… and not only did I not pay capital gains taxes I actually received a tax deduction in that year. By donating appreciated stocks, I was able to give more. And I was empowered to make a larger strategic gift to Room to Read.
I like to say about Room to Read: I love what they do and I love how they do it.
Geetha: Room to Read focuses on literacy and gender equality through education.
Through donors like Jodi and others who give through Schwab Charitable, Room to Read has received upwards of ten million dollars.
Jodi: I am going to fund a thousand girls over 10 years in one year of school.
Geetha: Schwab Charitable provides a service to our donors that helps us all be more efficient and effective with our time.
Jodi: It is so simple for me to go in with the click of a button and make an additional gift to Room to Read, or one of my philanthropic partners.
Geetha: Giving through Schwab Charitable can help donors’ money go further. We have found that up to 3-5% of a donors’ gift can go directly to programs as opposed to administrative expenses or the set-up of a private foundation.
Jodi: Schwab Charitable perfectly allows me to bridge my investment strategy with my philanthropic strategy.
Geetha: To date, Room to Read has reached 16.8 million children across 16 countries, and that scale would only be possible because of the long-term commitment of donors like those who give through Schwab Charitable.
Jodi: I now happily have a gender lens investment strategy. Now I know for the rest of my life, I will be able to fund the education of girls all over the world.
